Vinyl vs Wood Fence

Vinyl Fence

The positives of a vinyl fence are very low maintenance, bug free (including termites), resistant to graffiti (live in a rough part of town, eh), doesn't attract fungus, doesn't rot, and you do not have to re-paint it.

The negatives are that vinyl fences are more expensive, it can crack, you have limited color options to choose from, and the painting, while not needing to be repainted, will fade over time.

Wooden Fence

Here are the positives to going "au natural." They are far less expensive than vinyl, can be painted with any color, have more of a classic look, and you can hang plant hangers on them if that is your thing (gardeners will appreciate this).

When it comes to the negatives of wooden fences they require a lot more maintenance, can rot with rain+humidity, attract termites who want it for lunch, need annual treatments, and the boards warp over time.

Overall Consensus

Vinyl is a material that is more trouble free by far. You spend more money on it but then, as stated, you can virtually forget about it for years. Wood will give a home a more classic and homely look to it but it will require yearly maintenance. Look in any neighborhood, even the newer ones, and you will notice a lot more wooden fences than vinyl so the majority of homeowners either love wood despite its required upkeep or stick with what is there when they purchase the house. Builders use wood because, no surprise here, its cheaper. Which one is the best. You decide.
